The 2017 NMSDC Conference + Business Opportunity Exchange – A Great Networking and Learning Opportunity: Northwest Mountain MSDC

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON (NOVEMBER 6, 2017) –  “Fueling Economic Growth” was the fitting theme for the 2017 National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) Conference + Business Opportunity Exchange held in Detroit, Michigan from October 22nd – 25th, 2017.  Known as the world’s automotive center, Motor City or Motown.  Several of NMSDC corporate members, including Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Chrysler, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Comerica and Johnson Controls, are headquartered in Detroit.  NMSDC Chairman and Ford Motor Company President of Global Operations Joseph R. Hinrichs welcomed Conference Participants on behalf of NMSDC, which has now grown to be the country’s leading corporate membership organization, with more than 1,400 corporate members and 12,000 certified minority businesses.

Every year, the Northwest Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council (MSDC) supports the NMSDC by participating in various conference events, awarding Conference scholarships to MBEs, providing assistance to stakeholders attending the conference and business opportunity exchange, and helping promote the event. The conferences kicked off the networking portion of the event at the Welcome Reception on October 22nd at the Detroit Lions Stadium/ Ford Field where attendees enjoyed an evening of live music, local entertainment, international food stands and networking.  Conference participants gave rousing reactions to keynote speakers including Andra Rush, Chair and CEO of Rush Trucking Corporation, CEO and President of Dakkota Integrated Systems and Chair, CEO and President of Detroit Manufacturing Systems. The Business Opportunity Exchange held on Monday, October 23rd, featured both MBE and Corporate Member exhibits facilitating new connections, strengthening existing relationships, and exposing all Members and MBEs to over 6,000 participants.

The Northwest Mountain MSDC hosted a private reception for Corporate/Public Agency Members, Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) and guests on October 24th at TOWNHOUSE Detroit.  Every year, the Council awards two $1,000.00 Conference Scholarships to MBEs attending the NMSDC Conference. MBEs attending the private reception participated in a raffle  where two winners were selected to receive $1,000.00 Conference Scholarships.  Northwest Mountain MSDC President and CEO Fernando Martinez presented the $1,000.00 scholarships each to Don Durham of Inlingua Utah and RC Sunkara of Mavensoft Technologies. 

Hosted annually by the NMSDC, the next NMSDC Conference is from October 14th – 17th, 2018 in Austin, Texas.

MBEs meet Marketers at Session 1 of Marketing Series

The Northwest Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council and Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. presented “Building an Effective Marketing Process” a 3-part MBE Development series designed to streamline Council-certified minority business enterprise (MBE) branding, marketing, advertising, publicity and target market engagement. The first session was held in Tukwila, Washington on October 12th, 2017 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Northwest Mountain MSDC President and CEO Fernando Martinez moderated the discussion with panelists Carl Gipson, Director, External Affairs of AT&T, Inc.; Jason Dittmer, Director of Marketing and Communications of Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA); Dennis Brooks, President, and Jeff Quint, Executive Vice President of Trio Group.
The panel provided presentations, case studies and printed materials for the participants, and led proactive conversations with the audience during the Question and Answer portion.

The discussion covered the fundamentals of marketing:
•    The value of marketing
•    Setting your marketing budget
•    Effective branding

18 participants attended the event, representing 14 MBEs engaged in insurance services; construction, engineering and architecture; language and translation services; embroidery; business consulting; signs and promotions; technology services and solutions; staffing; food industry; and fresh flower distribution.  
The audience consisted of business owners, upper-level management and marketing professionals.


Participants expressed positive feedback and shared their anticipation for the second session which will be held on November 2nd, 2017. The third and last session will be held on November 17th, 2017.
